By Michelle May, M.D.

The description from the author’s website for Maggie Goes on a Diet, a children’s book (for ages 6 and up) slated for publication in October 2011 reads:

“Maggie has so much potential that has been hiding under her extra weight. This inspiring story about a 14 year old who goes on a diet and is transformed from being overweight and insecure to a normal sized teen who becomes the school soccer star. Through time, exercise and hard work, Maggie becomes more and more confident and develops a positive self image.”

  1. Terrific! Thanks for your creativity and inspiration–this is a great idea to do as a group.

  2. Hilarious, Michelle! What a fantastic response!

  3. Wonderful! It was like reading the story of my life (I even have a school picture that looks kind of like that). :)

Why don’t we publish this instead of the other??

  4. Brava! The original book makes me cringe—my eating disorder developed when I was 14, and 11 years later, I’m still entrenched (and not a bastion of self-confident soccer stardom, either). Though I believe childhood obesity is a serious issue, the equating of “dieting” and “thinness” with happiness and success is not the message we need to be sending anyone.

Great response, by the way. :)
